Google Maps ranking · guideHow to rank higher on Google Maps, and turn it into customers.
Google ranks the businesses on its map by three things: how well a listing matches the search, how far the business is from the person searching, and how well known it is. You cannot move your shop, but you can work on the other two this week, and measure the result.

The three things Google weighs
| What Google weighs | What it means | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| Relevance | How well your Business Profile matches what someone searched for. | Choose the most specific category that fits, and name your services in the words customers type. |
| Distance | How far your business is from the person searching. | Nothing directly, which is why your rank changes from street to street. Keep your address and service areas right. |
| Prominence | How well known your business is: its reviews and ratings, and how many other websites link to it. | Ask every customer for a review, reply to all of them, and keep your name, address and phone the same everywhere. |

Why the first three places matter.
For most searches with a place in them, such as “salon near me” or “dentist in Sector 62”, Google shows a map with three businesses above the ordinary results. Those three are what most people see without scrolling, each with a Call button and directions.
Your position also changes as the searcher moves. A shop can be first for someone across the road and missing for someone two kilometres away, so one search on your own phone tells you where you rank from your own counter, and little else.
What you can change this week.
- Complete your Business Profile. Category, services, hours, phone, website and a description, all filled in and correct. Google’s own advice starts here.
- Use the words your customers type. Name your services the way people search for them: “hair spa”, not only “treatments”.
- Keep your hours right, holidays included. Google asks for the hours customers can actually visit.
- Ask every customer for a review, and reply to all of them. Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking. Ask everyone, not only the happy ones, and never offer anything in return.
- Add real photos regularly: your shop, your team and your work.
- Post an update every week. Google does not list posts as a ranking factor, but an active listing gives a customer comparing three shops a reason to pick yours.
- Keep your name, address and phone identical everywhere: your website, Facebook, Justdial and every other listing.
Three shortcuts that break Google’s rules.
- Keywords in your business name. “Glow Salon Best Bridal Makeup Noida” breaks Google’s guidelines, and Google says it can suspend the profile for it.
- Bought or fake reviews. Paying for reviews, or writing your own, breaks Google’s policies, and Google removes them.
- An address you do not work from. A rented mailing address or virtual office is not eligible for a Business Profile.

Check the same searches every week.
Because Google ranks by distance, measure the same way every time: the searches your customers actually type, from your business’s own location, once a week. One good or bad day means little; the trend over a month tells you whether a change worked.
The free Google Maps rank check on our home page does it for one search, with no signup. On Growth and Pro, GrowStart AI re-checks up to 10 searches every week and suggests what to change next.
Questions, answered
How long does it take to rank higher on Google Maps?
A corrected category or a missing service can show within days. Reviews, and how well known you are, build over months. Check the same searches every week and judge the trend, not a single day.
Can I pay Google to rank higher on Maps?
No. Google says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Ads can appear above the map, marked as ads, but they do not change your place in it.
Why does my shop rank higher when I search on my own phone?
Because Google ranks by distance from the person searching. From your counter you are the closest shop; a customer two kilometres away sees a different list.
Do more reviews help my Google Maps ranking?
Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking. Ask every customer, reply to every review, and never pay or offer anything for one.
Does posting on my Business Profile improve my ranking?
Google does not list posts as a ranking factor. Posts keep your listing current and give a customer comparing shops a reason to choose yours, which is why we still recommend one a week.
Should I add keywords to my business name?
No. Google’s guidelines do not allow extra words in the business name, and breaking them can get the profile suspended. Use your real name, and put the keywords in your services and description.
